Hello,
I am Ms. Demers and I will be your fifth grade teacher! I am so excited for this year! We are going to learn so much! Please take a look around and make sure to save my email and the classroom phone number!
I am a graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor's in Interdisciplinary Studies and my Texas teacher certification in early childhood-6th grade. I also have an associates degree in Teaching from the Alamo Colleges. I also just finished my Master's of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Science Education focus December of 2017 at UTSA. My studies include pedagogy utilizing multicultural education, transformative curriculum, and education for social justice. I especially love learning about science and more particularly, marine biology. (If you would like to see a snapshot of my graduate studies, you can view one of my websites here: http://startingsteam.weebly.com )
I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in second grade. My teachers always looked like they were having fun and I wanted in on it! Since I was in second grade, I have had some amazing teachers and mentors who have helped me pursue my dream. Here I am now, living it!
Since I have become a formal educator, I have won two awards that I am very proud of. At the district level, I have won the New Educator of the Year and at the state level, I received the Texas Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development's T.E.A.C.H. Award for the elementary school level. To achieve these awards, I have utilized my past experiences and personal influences to help me discover my passion for teaching and helping young students. I strongly believe that learning happens formally and informally, and that we bring our experiences to school and work, even if it is involuntarily.
Some other priorities I have as a teacher include:
Family/School Connection
Accountability and Communication
Collaborative Learning
Applied Learning
Growth Mindset
Multiple/Critical Perspectives
Technology Integration
Interdisciplinary Learning
Community Involvement
Analysis of Data and Using Evidence to Inform and Form Arguments
Meeting the Needs of All Students
I am looking forward to getting to know each of you and your families this year! It is going to be GREAT!
